For He looks to the ends of the earth, Obsawing all under the skies; When He fixes the weight of the wind Aud measures the seas with a rule! When He makes a decree for the rain And a wav for the thunderous flash : He sees her, and makes a decree, Applies her, and also approves, Be assured, It is wisdom, to fear the Supreme; And sense, to abandon the wrong! @32 §’.i:xi!; Ileplg uf Qui:. But job proceeded lo take up his contention, and replied : Who will make me as in former months, As the times when GOD watched over me? When His lamp brightly shone o’er my head, And His light when l walked in the dark; As I was in the days of my wealth, When GOD counselled me in my tent; And whilst the Amxicnrv was mine, And servants attended around ; When washing my footpath in cream, When the rock poured me ponds full of oil. 26 28

When I went to the gate through the town, When I spread out my seat in the square; The children on seeing me hid, Q And the elder men rose up and stood; The princes broke 0H from their speech, And laid their hand over their mouth ; The voice of the nobles was still, And their tongue was held close to its roof. And when the ear heard me, it blest, And the eye that looked on me approved; For I rescued the wretch who appealed And the destitute who had no help ! The perishing brought me their thanks, And I igladdened the poor widow’s heart. In goodness I dressed, and was clothed, Imade justice my robe and my crown! And I became eyes to the blind, And I, also, was feet to the lame; And a father I was to the poor, And the cause ofthe friendless I searched. I broke the jaw teeth of the vile, And tore the prey out of their month! So I thought I should die in my nest, And add to my days like the sand ! That my roots would spread out to the streams, And the dew drops would rest on my boughs; And my honours be freshened for me, And my bow keep its spring in my hand l Then they waited to listen to me, And were silent to hear my advice; When I had spoke, no one replied, And upon them my sentences dropped. And they waited for me as for rain, And opened their mouths as for showers. If I laughed at thcm, did they believe? They turned not from the smile on my face!
