light of day itself could not shine, and atmosphere were darkened from the their foreheads. And it was granted death,‘and _not find it; they shall long ance of cavalry disciplined for war; the night the same. Then I saw, and heard a. single

eagle dying in mid-air, exclaiming Woe! wee! woe! to the inhabitants of the earth from the remaining utterances of the trumpet-blast of the three angels who are about to sound. Then the fifth angel sounded; and

I saw a Star fall from the sky on to the land; and the key of the pit of the abyss was given to him. And he opened the pit ofthe abyss : and smoke ascended from the pit like smoke from a greet furnace; and the sun and the smoke ofthe pit. And from the smoke there came locusts upon the land: and they were endowed with power resembling the power possessed by the scorpions of the earth. But they were commanded not to injure the herbage of the earth, nor any grass, nor any tree; but only those men who have not the mark of God upon to them not to kill them, but so that months. And their torture was like that of a scorpion when it stings a man. During those days men will seek to die, and death will fly from them! Then the locusts took the appear-

9 was hurled into the sea: and the third ofthe sea became blood ; and the third of the creatures which were in the sea, having life, died; and the third ofthe ships were wrecked. xo Then the third angel sounded ; and a burning star, like a great lamp, fell II I2 from the sky ; and it fell upon the third of the rivers, and upon the springs of waters. The name of the star was called Wormwood; and the third of the waters became wormwood; and many of mankind died from the waters, because they were embittered. Then the fourth angel sounded, and

the third of the sun was struck, and the third of the moon, and the third of the stars; so that the third of them were darkened, and the third of the they should be tormented for five and on their heads were crowns like gold ; and their faces resembled those of men. But they had hair like the 8 hair of women; and their teeth were like those of lions. They also wore 9 breastplates like breastplates of iron ; and the sound of their wings was like the roar of chariots, and many horses charging in battle They have also tails and stings like those of scorpions ; and in their tails they possessed their power to torture mankind for five months. They had over them aking, the Angel of the Abyss. In Hebrew his name is Abaddon; and in Greek he has a name, Apollyon. The first woe is past. See! two more woes come after it. Then the sixth angel sounded. And

I heard a single voice from the horns of the golden altar in the sight of God, which said to the sixth angel, who Liberate the four angels who are held captive beside the great river Euphrates? So they liberated the four angels who had been prepared for the hour, and day, and month, and year, so that they might kill the third of mankind. And the number of the regiments of the horse- men was two myriads of myriads. I heard the number of them. Then I also saw in the vision that the horses and their riders had fiery breastplates, . and purple and yellow. And the heads of the horses were like heads of lions; while tire, smoke, and sulphur, leaped from their mouths. By means of these three plagues the third of mankind was killed; by the fire, the smoke, and the sulphur, which leaped from their mouths. For the power of the horses is in their mouths, and in their tails: for their tails are like serpents possess— ing heads; and with them they wound. But the remainder of mankind,

those who were not cut off by these plagues, failed to turn from the works of their own hands, so as not to worship the demons, and the idols of gold, silver, brass, stone, and wood, which cannot see, nor hear, nor walk ; neither did they abandon their murders, nor their poisonings, nor their fornications, nor their robberies. Then I saw another mighty angel

coming down from the heaven, robed in acloud. And the rainbow encircled his head; and his face like the sun; and his feet like pillars of fire; and holding in his hand a very small 1261 I0 I I I2 16
